Hello there Rockets,

I have had a couple of 'Illegal request' errors reported with Matshita DVD_RAM drives recently. Any idea what is going on? I am using Tomahawk. Here are the error messages:

1) Yes I do. You burner does not support support DAO96 you're trying to use for CD. Switch to TAO or SAO.

2) It's a good idea to PROBE write modes before doing actual burn. And allow the user to pick up SUPPORTED ones.

3) For a faster turn around don't post log quotes. In nearly 100% of the cases we need complete log (not in this particular one however, you've been just lucky).

1. OK, thanks. I find it amazing that a modern drive behaves in this way.

2. I thought I already did this. I will check my code. But it may be that StarBurn (or, more likely, the drive) is claiming to support modes it cannot handle. I will report back on this if I learn anything useful.

3. These abbreviated logs are generally all I have (this is happening at a customer site). They are logged by my software and, I hope, are of more value than nothing at all. If a problem can't be resolved in this way, I will attempt to persuade the customer to collect a full log and then email it to you.

Thanks, as ever, for your prompt and efficient help :) Love the product.

1) Noticable part of all modern DVD burners can do SAO but cannot do DAO. It's normal. Accept this cruel life AS IS.

2) It could be this way. And it could be other way. If I'd have the log I could tell for sure. But indeed, it COULD happen drive reports "I can do DAO" but actual DAO burn fails and no single application on Earth is DAO-capable on this particular drive. But it's not this case as drive rejects setting DAO write paremeters. Pretty much what probe sequence does itself...

3) Not really. If it would not be mode select command to set DAO write parameters I would probably tell "I don't know and your info is not in use for me".

:)

Thanks!

This cruel life means that my software can't burn track listings to audio CDs on these drives. I don't call that progress. Not your fault, of course. I guess we're just stuck with it.

This is not true. As I've told use SAO (mostly supported) or TAO (always supported) in such a case. Of course DAO is the best for Audio CDs, but better allow to burn w/o CD-Text then not burn at all, right?

Yes of course, no complaints there.

Hello again,

I am informed that Windows Media Player can burn CD-Text to these drives. I am not in a position to try this for myself as I do not have a drive to test with, but I believe the person who told me so. Is there any way this can be achieved with StarBurn? Thanks.

It's also possible to burn CD-Text in RAW SAO + SUB mode. We don't support this unfortunately...

OK, thanks. Given that fewer drives are supporting DAO these days (or so you tell me), can I put in a vote for adding this feature to the next version of StarBurn? Thank you.

I would not say DAO is not supported these days. Some DVD burners have TAO & SAO, some have both. The ones w/o DAO in the early versions of the firmware get support later and so on.
