I have a client that has a DVD he createed using a Sony DVD Recorder. We are unable to rip the disc using Starburn. The problem is similar to one we had with an authoring program a while ago and you had to add a hack for that. In this case the disc has three tracks according to Nero but only one according to Starburn. I'm emailing the log files(to Anton) and a screen shot of nero. I've created log files of ImageGrabber(both in ASPI and STPI mode) and log files of GrabDisc and GrabTrack command lines. I tride forcing Grabtracks to grab track 2 but it says there is no track 2. This should sound familiar since it is almost exactly the same problem I had before.

Here is the link to the similar problem.

It goes to email before we found the issue was actual that there were two tracks. The first track was tiny and was all GrabDisc(or GrabTrack) was able to read. You gave me a test version of StarBurn.dll to fix the problem(which it did for that disc). Let me know if you need the orningal emails from that. I probably still have them.

One other thing. I'v also got another disc from the same client . it was created using some other authoring program. I am able to rip it and make a mostly working DVD from the iso, however the disc does not show up as a DVD in windows(the oringinal does and auto runs media play to play it if I double click the drive). Do I have to add something when I burn an ISO of a DVD to make the disc look like a DVDVideo disc to Windows?

1) Got the logs. From the first view - recorded disc has absolutely crazy disc layout - first it was recorded as ISO/UDF (bridge) with next 2 sessions appended as ISO9660 (with some extensions) tracks. I'll reproduce this combination here but I doubt we can trace and work with it.

BTW - ripping second or third tracks has absolutely no sense - stored information would be unreadable as it has 1) non-zero disc offset for the beginning 2) references to the files located on missing tracks.

2) Burn it as single session DVD.

1. Yes, I know. This is from the Sony standalone DVD Recorder so who knows what it's trying to do. Just a note that the disc does play.

2.I'm burning an ISO copy of the DVD as a single session(trackatoncefromfile and closetrack). Is that what you mean?

Here some more info on the 1. I've done some research and it looks like most standalone recorders use a format called DVD+VR(there is also a DVD-VR but it isn't DVDVideo compatible). DVD+VR is supposed to be compatible with DVDVideo but it uses "tricks" to allow multiple recordings. I wasn't able to find specific information on the format. Also I've walked through my program and have information on thse standalone disc.

DiscInformation
m__BOOLEAN__IsValid 0x01
m__UCHAR__DiscStatus 0x02
m__UCHAR__LastSessionStatus 0x03
m__BOOLEAN__IsErasable 0x00
m__UCHAR__FirstTrackNumber 0x01
m__UCHAR__NumberOfSessions 0x01
m__UCHAR__LastSessionFirstTrack 0x01
m__UCHAR__LastSessionLastTrack 0x03
m__BOOLEAN__IsGEN 0x01
m__BOOLEAN__IsDBCValid 0x00
m__BOOLEAN__IsDIDValid 0x00
m__UCHAR__DiscType 0xff
+ m__UCHAR__DiscIdentification 0x0d1afdec ""
+ m__UCHAR__LastSessionLeadIn 0x0d1afdf0 ""
+ m__UCHAR__LastPossibleStartTime 0x0d1afdf4 ""
+ m__UCHAR__DiscBarCode 0x0d1afdf8 ""
m__UCHAR__NumberOfOPCEntries 0x00 ''

TOCInformation
m__BOOLEAN__IsValid 0x01
m__BOOLEAN__IsDVD 0x01
m__USHORT__ProtectedDVDRegions 0x0000
+ m__UCHAR__BusKeyForDiscKey 0x0d1adb08 m__UCHAR__NumberOfSessions 0x01
m__UCHAR__NumberOfTracks 0x01
m__UCHAR__NumberOfUnsortedEntries 0x01
+ m__TOC_ENTRY 0x0d1adb10
+ m__FULL_TOC_ENTRY_RAW 0x0d1ae858
+ m__FULL_TOC_ENTRY_RAW__Unsorted 0x0d1aeca4

As you can see the DiscInformation.LastSessionLastTrack shows 3 but the TOCInformation.NumberOfTracks only shows 1. This is the same problem that Pinicle produced discs had. I can only grab the first track which is only about 6.48 megs. Nero was however able to copy the whole disc and burn a playable disc(though I had to lower the burn speed and it would only allow me to burn to a DVD-R disc).

It's not a multi session DVD. It's a multi track DVD. It only has a single session as you can see from the DiscInformation structure. Yes, it does have a screwed up TOC but the disc has three data tracks. I need to be able to copy these and I can't because your trackatonce command is determining tracks available from the TOC and not from the DiscInformation. Every couple months I find somethiong new Starburn DOESN"T do. If I'm not mistaken your primary competitors are Nero SDK and Prassi. Both of which can copy this disc. My company has now paid your company approx $2500 for Starburn and we keep running into thing sit can't do but the competition can.

Nathan,

It's the same thing. Multitrack = multisession = multiborder (for DVDs).

I think you'll perfectly run into the same situation with any other burning toolkit or any other software or hardware on the market. Everybody has limitations. The question is - how company handle this limitations :) See below.

I'm still checking this issue (could it be solved in fast way or not). For now I'm extremely busy with new UDF/Unicode engine for StarBurn but after I'll be done (I think not more then two or three weeks from now) I'll pass it to UI/sample programmers and would re-write DVD grab/burn engine *for copy* purpose. So we'll handle even absolutely crazy disc layouts (like the one you have now). For DVD/Blu-Ray.

You can even help me with sending some Nero and ISO Buster screenshots from both source and destination media like this. Unfortunately I was not able to produce such a media myself here :( Your help is highly appreciated and would speed up process quite a lot.

Thank you very much for understanding and cooperation! And sorry if we cannot meet all your expectations ATM. That's why you and your company are one from the best customers we have. Honestly!
