I know how to calculate the erase time for a full erase, but how to calculate it for a quick erase? Is there a difference between Cds and DVDs when doing this?

This one is drive and disc dependent dependent. For CD only lead-in is erased so it's ~15MB / drive burning speed (if lead-in was really written, for blank CD-RW short erase will be faster) for DVD+RW media it's only 64-128KB written (read - will return nearly immediately), for the formatted DVD-RW media ~100 MB will be written for single session DVD-RW it will take time... I'd implement "cycling" progress to keep user watching something. IMHO.
