Hi, I'm creating BluRay-discs using JStarBurn.

I noticed that setting the setNextSessionAllowed-parameter to false does not properly close the created discs. After finishing the write process, the disc's status is "appendable" instead of "complete".

BD-R, BD-RE, DVD+RW, DVD-RAM and formatted DVD-RW are *always* appendable. You cannot finalize them. At all.

That seems a bit strange to me because I can use cdrecord to fixate the discs previously created with JStarBurn. After that action the discs' status is "complete".

When I create a BD with Nero and select "No Multisession" or "Multisession" with "Finalize"-option the disc's status is also "complete". I also get a "complete" disc when writing the disc with "dvd+rw-tools".

I need the finalization because I'm using the discs for archiving medical data and to comply with legal requirements it is necessary that the data on the discs can't be modified in any form.

Try burning to BD-RE or DVD+RW you've recorded with Nero with finalization. You'll be surprised

Hm. I don't agree with you regarding BD-R.

No program that I tried, was able to write data to a finalized BD-R. Also JStarBurn throws an Exception:

CStarBurn_ScsiTransportASPI::ExecuteCDB(): Command failed

Correct me if I'm wrong...
Writing BD-RE is something completely different. These kind of media are formatted and of course writing data to it is also possible when the medium is fixated because no additional session is added but the data is written "into" the formatted area.

What I missed to note is that I only want to finalize BD-R, not BD-RE...

BD-Rs can be written in two ways. One is doing something close to track-by-track and other is so-called pseudo-restricted overwrite mode. We use latest one when BD-R "emulates" random-access media.

Just to make sure I don't misunderstand you...

It is not possible to protect a BD-R medium created with the StarBurnSDK from later modifications.

No. BD-Rs will be always writable (until re-map area exhausted).
