Brand new XP SP2 install, updated to SP3, no software firewall, antivirus, etc, but computer is behind NAT firewall.
Intel 3800 dual core on Gigabit motherboard, Sony DVD burner.

The initial install hung the system so badly I had to hit the power button to recover.
Subsequent attempted use was to create an image from a CD. It seemed to work, then hung at 99%. It "lost" my desktop for me, and I had to shutdown with the power button again.
Upon rebooting, the ISO has been created, and is accessible.
Image appears to share properly, but the program is unusable as is.

Any clues or suggestions, please?

Absolutely! Please try to update to the most recent SPTD layer from here:

http://www.duplexsecure.com/downloads

and then let us know did it work or not. Thanks!

The installler for the update said that it was the same version as the installed version. I installed it anyway, but the behavior is still the same.

Additional info: I tried the second optical device on the machine, but though the CD is identified by StarBurn - and readable perfectly by Windows XP, StarBurn complained that there was no data on the CD.

Hope you have another idea up your sleeve :-)

Last note: I tried it on another computer and it worked perfectly, so I know that it CAN work.

What other software is installed on your PC? Can we have exact list?

Sure.

It's a brand new install of XP (completed last night), updated to SP3, on brand new hardware - it was my son's Christmas present. I have loaded only the following (apart from the hardware drivers):

Apple Quicktime (without iTunes);
Microsoft Media Player 9;
Macromedia plug-in for IE;

Midi Maestro - a Midi composer program;
Worms Triple Pack - an older computer game for kids;
Gubble - another older computer game for kids.

The latter two programs installed perfectly from CD-ROM media.

That's it. I have NO other CD-ROM burning software loaded.

Windows loaded without a hitch, the DVD and CD ROM drives work fine other than through StarBurn.

The motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-EP45C-DS3R.
The video card is an ATI Radeon HD4830.

I updated the firmware of the Sony DRD drive, but the behavior of StarBurn has not changed.

Still hoping you have other ideas ...

Funny question - do you have other burning software working with the same drive and the same system?
