Hello,

I'm writing a program and intend to use Starburn SDK for writing multisession dvds and the number of multisessions will have to be 100 or more. I heard that there exsists something called "incremental writing" (udf vat) for dvds and "packet recording" for cds:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_ ... VAT_flavor

...and that using that method no overhead per write is required. However I googled for a SDK that supports that and I found none. Does anybody know anything about that and will it be supported in the future in Starburn SDK?

And the other thing I want to know is: how much space per session is "wasted" when using DVD multisession and how much MB do padding, "lead-in" and "lead-out" (or "block-in" and "block-out") consme. I read somewhere that the number is 13 MB for cds (28 MB for the first session) and 8-16 MB for a DVD.

I also read that the maximum number of sessions for a DVD+R is 191.

Does anybody know the exact figures and whether there are differences between DVD+R and DVD-R and the filesystem used (ISO or UDF)?

Thanks,

Hrvoje

We don't support packet writting and have no plans to do support it ever. It requires too much of the UDF specification to be implemented in the software. And also packet written DVDs have numerous problems with different UDF packet writing software and OS configurations.

If you don't want to waste the space - use rewritable formatted media. Like DVD+RW, DVD-RW or DVD-RAM (-RAM is recommended as it has automatic bad block management).

Cпасибі. But if somebody knows what is the overhead for DVDs per session and whether it depends on the type (DVD+R or DVD-R) or the number of files in previous sessions and what is the maximum number of sessions that would be very useful to me...

For DVD-R initial session has overhead of around 100 megabytes. Each next session takes 10-12 megabytes more. For DVD+R these values are smaller. Number of sessions is just below 200 (but for CD compatibility it's recommended to have them not more then 99). There's ohter probiem with ISO9660/Joliet - file system structures must be below 4GB border.
