Hi,

I have a new question :)

1) I use GetTrackInformation() of Invisible track in order to retrieve the available free space on a disc. The issue I have is that I will then create a file that matches the size of that free space, and then put it under some subfolder and burn that to the disc, wouldn't I be overburning ? After all, creating a folder would also take up some space on disc, and closing the disc would also require some space right (my assumption, correct me if I'm wrong) ?

So, my question is, how do I find out how much actual space I can use to store my file after taking into account the folders that needs to be created, closing disc overhead, etc ?

2) Also, after running several tests, it appears Starburn will automatically close a disc if there isn't enough free space for more sessions. This appear to be consistent for all media I tested on: CD-RW, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW. Can you confirm that this is consistent for all media, including those that I have not tested on ? It would have been good if information like this is properly documented, then I would not have to waste so much time in testing.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Regards,
Chris

1) Yes, it would be overburning. For CD-R/CD-RW media it's required to write down something like 15 megabytes for lead-out, for DVD-R media first border-out is about 150 megabytes, next border-outs are around 30 megabytes. DVD+R is the same, formatted DVD-RW, +RW and -RAM show true capacity.

2) Unfortunately it's not we but drive :)

Hi Anton,

Thanks for your quick response as usual :)

Following up from question 2, is this behaviour of the drive to automatically close full discs standard on all drives ? How full does the media have to be before it would trigger the drive to automatically close the disc ?

Also, why is the drive able to *really* close DVD+/-RW/-R media, but I can't use Starburn to it ?

The reason why I am asking so many questions on all these things is because my app needs to be able to automatically close a disc if it cannot fit another session ... but this is hard to do using Starburn :(

Regards,
Chris

Chris,

no, it's not standart. It's up to the drive what to do. F.e. TEACs (original CD-RW burners, not current PIONEER rebranded stuff) support overburn in TAO mode so they would not close session, LGs - would.

On your place I would keep track on the amount of disc space left. If it's just a bit more then lead-in + lead-out for next session (say 25 MB for CD-R/CD-RW media) - I would disable multisession during current burn.

Hi Anton,

Unfortunately, the problem here is that I can't disable multisession in current burn for certain DVD media formats like DVD-R. We discussed this problem in a different thread previously ...

Chris,

I'll fix this stuff for DVD-R and DVD+R (honest!), however I can do nothing with formatted DVD-RW, DVD+RW and -RAM...

Hi Anton,

Just wanna confirm the overheads for DVD-R. You said it's 150MB for first session and 30MB for subsequent sessions, but my testing shows first session overhead to be about 60MB and subsequent sessions at about 20MB ? Also, for DVD+R, I found the overhead to be about 5MB for all sessions ?

Can you give me a safe figure to use for the above types to use for estimating when to close the session ?

Thanks for all your help :)

Regards,
Chris

Chris,

I'll burn some of the discs today and would let you know the numbers.

P.S. Larger ones are safer :)

Hi Anton,

Thanks for your help. Actually, maybe you should create a table with all these figure and put it in Starburn help file. I'm sure there'll be other people asking the same questions :)

BTW, when's the next release of Starburn coming out ? The one that's will fix the issues I highlighted in the other threads ?

Thanks again,
Chris

1) Good idea. Please let me know - which ones exactly and I'll do this for sure :)

2) Please see other threads. If nothing would go deadly wrong we're expectin to release major update this week.

Hi Anton,

If possible, it would be good if we can have a reference table for overhead sizes for all the different types of media. But if I had to choose, I would like to know for DVD+R & DVD-R first :)

Great, looking forward to the release.

Thanks,
Chris

OK :)

BTW, I think you're waiting for extended TOC API call and for code to override last session on DVD-RW if multisession was previously used? Correct?

Chris,

OK, so you'll have preview version soon (before we'll create official release). Private DLL you'll have to verify :)
